DAS Communications’ lawyer claims producer Dr. Luke convinced her to breach contract.

Ke$ha is being sued by her former managers at DAS Communications for upwards of $14 million, Ken Freundlich, who is representing DAS in the case, confirmed to MTV News.
“DAS was Ke$ha’s manager since the beginning of 2006, and there was a written agreement, and they worked closely, and sometime in September 2008 [producer] Dr. Luke, for his own personal gain, somehow induced her to breach that contract,” Freundlich said. “And she unceremoniously terminated DAS without justification and then ended up with Luke, basically. So we sued Ke$ha for breach of contract and Luke for interference, and that was last year, and the defense’s reaction was to try and delay us. They made motions.
“The judge denied all their motions, and now we’re going forward. We’re going to have our day in court,” he continued. “And we’re going to prove that Dr. Luke induced her to breach the contract. She had no right to do so, and we’re gonna get damages from her.”
Freundlich explained how he and his team came to the $14 million sum, explaining, “We don’t know exactly how much, but we assume it’s in that range. She’s been quite successful. The case is set. It’s gonna go on the rest of this year. We’re gonna go straight to the trial if we have to.”
Ke$ha has filed a suit in California against the management team, but Freundlich is confident nothing will come of her claim that they acted as an “illegal talent agent.” “That’s pending out in California. Even though that case is still pending, I don’t think it has any merit,” he said.
Calls to Ke$ha’s legal team and rep were not returned to MTV News by press time.

One thing became clear during testimony in the preliminary hearing of Dr. Conrad Murray on Monday (January 10) in Los Angeles: The cardiologist ordered a lot of the powerful anesthetic propofol in the months before his client Michael Jackson’s death.
Los Angeles County Coroner’s officials determined that the pop star died of a lethal dose of the surgical anesthetic in June 2009. Jackson’s personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, has admitted that he administered propofol to the singer in the hours before Jackson’s passing.
And while Murray’s lawyers have said that their client did not do anything that “should have” caused Jackson’s death and may be preparing a defense in which they will claim that it was Jackson himself that administered the fatal dose, during continuing testimony in the second week of Murray’s pretrial hearing on involuntary manslaughter charges, it became clear that there was plenty of propofol around.
According to TMZ, pharmacist Tim Lopez of Las Vegas Applied Pharmacy Services — Murray has offices and a home in Las Vegas — testified that Murray ordered more than 250 vials of propofol in the two months before Jackson’s death. The drug is intended for use in a clinical setting during surgery where equipment is on hand to monitor blood pressure and oxygen levels.
Investigators executed search warrants on Murray’s Las Vegas home and office, as well as Applied Pharmacy, in summer 2009 in search of evidence connected to an investigation into Jackson’s death. The coroner’s investigation reported that 12 vials of propofol were found in the bedroom and closet of Jackson’s rented mansion after his death, and last week, one of the singer’s bodyguards testified that in the moments before a 911 call was placed, Murray asked him to help put medical evidence in a bag, including vials that appeared to contain a milky substance that resembled propofol.
Jackson, a chronic insomniac, allegedly used propofol as a sleep aid, and according to Lopez’s testimony, from the time Murray came onboard as Jackson’s physician in April until the singer’s death, the doctor ordered 130 vials of propofol in 100-millileter doses and another 125 in 20-millileter vials, as well as more than 40 vials of the sedative Versed and the anti-anxiety drug Ativan, which, like the propofol, was sent to Murray’s girlfriend’s home in Santa Monica, California, where he was staying while caring for Jackson. According to The Associated Press, Murray told Lopez the Santa Monica address was for one of the doctor’s clinics.
Also on Monday, the judge in the case, Michael Pastor, ruled that recently obtained data from Murray’s iPhone can be admitted as evidence in the case. The evidence reportedly includes a handful of voicemails and 12 screenshots.
The AP reported that a retired federal investigator testified on Monday that he retrieved e-mail from Murray’s cell phone that included an exchange between the doctor and a London insurance broker who was handling the policy for Jackson’s planned series of “This Is It” comeback shows. On the morning of Jackson’s death, the broker asked Murray to respond to reports that the 50-year-old singer was in poor health. “As far as the statements of his health published by the press, let me say they’re all malicious to the best of my knowledge,” Murray replied.
So far, prosecutors have used phone records and testimony from police and Murray’s current and former girlfriends to create a timeline that shows that the doctor was on the phone throughout the morning of Jackson’s death, including the time after he administered the last of several doses that morning of propofol to the pop star. Previous testimony has focused on Murray’s botched attempts to deliver CPR to Jackson, the delay in calling 911 and the belief by paramedics that the “Thriller” singer was already dead when they transported him to a local hospital.
The preliminary hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to bring Murray to trial is expected to last around two weeks. Murray has pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of involuntary manslaughter, which could land him in prison for up to four years.

From the outside looking in, the world of voice acting holds an allure that seems glamorous in a different way than traditional acting. There’s no wardrobe to fit, no hair and makeup to arrange, no far-off location to travel to, and so forth. All an actor has to do is show up and speak into a microphone. According to the lead voices behind “Gnomeo and Juliet” (an animated take on Shakespeare’s classic), James McAvoy and Emily Blunt, there are indeed a few benefits.
But it’s definitely not as basic as some might think. MTV News recently spoke to Blunt and McAvoy, who told us effective voice work requires a few tricks.
“I feel like you have to overact the entire time because you don’t realize how flat your voice sounds when it’s faceless and expressionless,” Blunt said. “So you actually have to over-enunciate and really leap around to add some kind of liveliness to the way you speak,” she explained. “It was interesting. We were told often to smile while we were talking because it actually lightens your voice up. It was interesting.”
McAvoy added that you can actually hear the smile in the voice. “It was quite interesting. Even when the character is not supposed to be smiling, they’d like to hear the smile,” he said.
Blunt also revealed that a few of her scenes were a bit embarrassing because she had to run in place in order to act out certain action sequences.
“They need reactions from you falling on something or swinging or grabbing a hold of something,” she explained. “So that’s when you have to emanate every kind of sound you can ever muster up. It’s very strange.”

MADRID — Earlier in the night Justin Bieber lost Best New Act to Ke$ha at the 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards, but he certainly redeemed himself when he won the category of Best Male. He beat out vets like Eminem, his mentor Usher, Enrique Iglesias and Kanye West for the prize.
He accepted the award from “Hannah Montana” star Emily Osment via satellite since he was acting as the night’s digital host. Wearing a black leather jacket and T-shirt, he told the crowd at the Caja Magica in Madrid, “This is amazing. I don’t even know what to say. I think that all the other artists in the category are inspirations to me. I’m honored to win this. It’s a big achievement.”
And since Bieber wasn’t there, they played the video for “Baby” — perhaps to remind everyone why he won the award. Bieber also won the award for Best Push Artist.
Earlier this year, Bieber won the Best New Artist VMA. “Wow,” the teen sensation gasped after making his way to the stage back in September. Bieber said that as a young kid from Canada, he was surprised by the honor, saying, “This means a lot to me.” The teen star shouted out music industry execs, showed respect to his “big bro” (“Thank you to Usher for being my mentor”) and, of course, his fans: “Thank you to everybody here.”
When Ke$ha took the stage for her Best New Act award during the EMA show earlier on Sunday, she expressed her gratitude to the fans for helping her beat out the likes of Bieber, Jason Derülo and B.o.B. “Oh my god! You guys, I’m gonna pee my pants!” she said, clutching her award. “Thank you to my fans. My fans are badass. I also want to thank my mom and my family, RCA, Dr. Luke and everyone who ever believed in me, but I could not have done this without my amazing, crazy, beautiful fans. Thank you so much. I make music for you and hopefully I can inspire you guys to give the finger to the cynics and f—ing be yourself, so thank you so much.”

British adventurer Chris Foot is currently in Punta Arenas, Chile, preparing to set out on a long and difficult journey that will see him traveling on skis to the South Pole. That, in and of itself, is an impressive feat, but one that has done plenty of times in the past. But upon arrival at the Pole Chris intends to separate himself from the explorers who have gone before him, by turning around and skiing back to where he started, something that has never been done before.
The entire journey will cover more than 1392 miles through one of the most desolate and remote regions on the planet. To add to the challenge, Foot intends to make the trip solo and unsupported, which means he will be completely alone and won’t receive any supply drops or outside assistance for the length of the expedition. Instead, he’ll pull a sled behind him that will carry all of his food, equipment, and other supplies for the length of the journey, which could last for upwards of three months.
The expedition will begin and end at the new Union Glacier Antarctic base that we told you about last week, and could get underway as soon as today. Weather has delayed the start of Chris’ journey, as high winds and heavy snow have prevented planes from landing at the new base, but according to the latest dispatches from the former British commando, his gear has all been packed and weighed, and he is awaiting a clear weather window to allow him to get start the long, slow march to 90ºS.
Chris will be one of the first adventurers to hit the ice this year, but his arrival will mark the beginning of the Antarctic expedition season that will see other expeditions heading to the South Pole as well. Additionally, mountaineers will challenge themselves on several cold and remote peaks in the region and adventure travelers will get the opportunity to visit a place that few ever experience.

Rick Ross is a man of honor.
The Miami Don recorded a video for his Lil Wayne-assisted track “Veteran’s Day,” but the Boss waited until the Cash Money superstar was released from prison before putting out the track.
“I just wanted to hold it down until the homie came home and celebrate like that with the homie,” Ross told MTV News.
Weezy wasn’t able to see the final version of the visual before he turned himself in to begin an eight-month prison sentence on Rikers Island in March. Now free, though, Ross said Wayne has had a chance to see the finished product.
“Birdman hit me after we released the video, he bigged up Spiff,” Ross said of the Cash Money label head giving props to director Spiff TV. “He bigged up the whole team. This is what we gonna keep doing.”
The horn-laden track leaked prior to the release of Ross’ Teflon Don album, but he decided to keep the song off of that project. Instead, he held onto the full-length version. (The leak featured only a portion of the track and didn’t include all of the lyricists who make the final cut.) Ross said the track is now a gift for fans; he has no plans to place it on a future album or mixtape.
“I had the love to follow through with the video and execute it and deliver it,” he explained. “It was a record that I loved, that just didn’t make it. A lot of times it just happens like that. This is as far as it’s gonna go. It’s for the people.”

A 4chan user declared war today against Tumblr, a blogging platform favored by the young and net savvy. And by 4chan of course we mean /b/, the site’s anarchic no-rules subforum famous for trolling and “raiding” websites and organizations.
Because Tumblr users (like many other sites) constantly post memes that often originate on /b/ without giving credit, the people behind this movement feel that Tumblr needs to be punished. “These hipsters constantly steal our memes and claim them as their own,” says the angry poster.
So what are they going to do about it? For starters, they (and again, “they” simply means anyone who agrees with the guy posting this on /b/) plan to set up dummy accounts, attempt to garner a ton of followers, and then surprise them by flooding their dashboards with gory photos, bizarre fetish porn and other unsavory images.
Now, they insist this is only phase one, but it’s a pathetic start to a half-baked idea. First, memes belong to everyone and /b/ is full of content reposted from elsewhere. But more practically, Tumblr is built so that if you don’t like what someone is posting, you can “unfollow” them immediately. So, the worst these trolls will do is expose a few bloggers to one or two gross photos before they get unfollowed.
[UPDATE: 4channers are planning a denial-of-service attack and Tumblr users are fighting back.]
The angry /b/ users also plan to hack into the accounts of popular Tumblr users, which would be way more effective a troll but of course more difficult to pull off. I’ll believe it when I see it.
Another user suggests pointing their LOIC’s at Tumblr. LOIC stands for Lower Orbit Ion Cannon, the nickname of a program that will DoS (Denial of Service) attack a targeted site.

On October 14, Dimmu Borgir — who just happen to be Demi Lovato’s favorite black-metal band — will release a a three-disc DVD/CD set called “The Invaluable Darkness,” the band’s first visual offering since 2002′s “World Misanthropy.” Boasting live footage shot last year, during gigs in Norway, Germany and England, “The Invaluable Darkness” demonstrates the unbridled furor of seeing Dimmu live, guitarist Silenoz said.
“It shows the honest rawness and atmospheric darkness of our concerts,” the Norwegian told Metal File last week, after dismissing recent online rumors that his band’s next LP would be coming out through Roadrunner Records. “Basically, it shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums. It’s just a different side to the band, basically.”
Dimmu Borgir began thinking about “The Invaluable Darkness” two years ago, but didn’t start capturing footage until last summer, Silenoz explained, adding that the band will use its current stint on the Blackest of the Black Tour — which got underway Thursday night in Miami Beach, Florida, and also features the tour’s founder, Danzig, along with Moonspell, Winds of Plague and Skeletonwitch — to promote the DVD. Dimmu Borgir will not, however, use the tour to write material for their next LP.
“It’s our first time on Blackest, but Glenn [Danzig] had wanted to bring us out before [on the tour], but we weren’t available until now,” Silenoz said. “We’ve done Ozzfest before, but we’re looking forward to this tour more. We did the main stage on Ozzfest, playing in f–_ing broad daylight. This tour will let us play in bigger places, but at the same time showcase more of what the band’s about, visually. We are going to concentrate on the tour for now. Some years ago, we tried putting [material] together on the road, but once we got home, we listened back to it, and were like, ‘What the f— is this?’ So, we just scrapped it all. We find it’s so much better to totally focus on one thing at a time, and then, when that’s over, you move on to the next [thing]. We don’t really feel like we need to rush things, anyway, so we’ll just take our time, and it’s going to be what it’s going to be.”
Dimmu Borgir hope to reconvene in late December to begin writing the follow-up to 2007′s diabolically titled In Sorte Diaboli. “We have some ideas floating around already, but we haven’t arranged any material yet,” he said. “We’ll start doing that once the touring for this DVD is over.” The band’s frontman, Shagrath, is also due to marry soon — he’s engaged to actor Nicolas Cage’s ex-girlfriend, Christina Fulton, so that may have an effect on when Dimmu finish their next album, which Silenoz said could be out this coming spring.
“I’m sure [Shagrath] won’t let anything get in the way [of] the band — I think, I hope,” the guitarist said. “We don’t need a Yoko [Ono] situation.”
While Dimmu have been at it going on 15 years now, Silenoz said he doesn’t think their forthcoming material will be much of a departure from their previous black-metal offerings.
“And we have always been about more than just that term, ‘black metal,’ ” he said. “Luckily for us, the older you get, the less concerned you get with the categorization and putting labels on your music. Things start getting more and more limitless with us, and we know that we operate within certain frames. But we try not to analyze things too much, because it’s just going to be working against you in the end. When we write new stuff, we don’t think about what we should write — we just get together, and put material together, and if we like it, we keep it. That’s the formula, if we even have a formula.”
Dimmu Borgir are definitely getting older — guitarist Galder will be missing Blackest because of a recent addition to his family, and Susperia’s Cyrus will be filling in for him; while former Vader drummer Dariusz Brzozowski takes over for Hellhammer, who had to leave the band in 2007 after sustaining a neck injury that’s now limited the use of his right arm. As Dimmu has gotten on in years, Silenoz admits they have failed to keep pace with some of the more extreme black-metal acts that have followed in their wake.
“We helped open doors for the more extreme bands out there,” Silenoz said. “I’m sure we helped open doors for bands like Watain, [insomuch as] people that had maybe started listening to us first then went on to the more extreme stuff. Let’s face it — we’re not as extreme as Watain and other bands like that, but we’re fine with that.”
The Blackest of the Black Tour continues through November 10 in San Francisco.

Former Killswitch Engage frontman Jesse Leach and current Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz have teamed up for a new project they’re calling Times of Grace, and they’ve already started working on material for their debut album. According to Leach, “We have two songs to go and we will be finished with all of the vocals. Adam has taken lead vocals in three songs as of yet and he is doing a great job. We also worked on a track yesterday that is so epic — we trade vocals and do two different melodies at the same time. This album went from a melodic metal album to an epic mix of metal/rock/pop/shoegaze and punk. Nearly three years after Roadrunner Records’ Roadrunner United concert, which took over the Nokia Theater in New York’s Times Square, the label is now releasing footage from that special night as “Roadrunner United: The Concert.” The DVD, which hits stores December 9, will boast two discs and 24 live tracks, including Life of Agony’s “River Runs Red,” King Diamond’s “Abigail,” Killswitch’s “My Last Serenade,” Type O Negative’s “Black No. 1″ and Sepultura’s “Refuse/Resist.” …
According to Blabbermouth, Verrot, bassist for Swedish black-metal outfit Elimi, committed suicide on October 3. In a statement, the band said, “Verrot was a very good friend, brother, an excellent bass player/musician and an important part of Elimi; we respect his decision and hope he’ll find his way with the dark gods of Chaos. Let your black flame be a part of what brings forth the day of wrath.”

Lady Gaga has notched another milestone on her road to global pop-culture domination. The 24-year-old singer was recently named one of Forbes magazine’s World’s 100 Most Powerful Women list alongside CEOs, heads of state and media phenoms like herself.
Gaga took the #7 slot on the list, which was unveiled Wednesday (October 6), behind women such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and first lady Michelle Obama, who was named the most powerful woman on the planet (and is the first African-American to top the list). Gaga was the second-most powerful entertainer in the rankings, coming in behind Oprah, who clocked in at #3.
Other powerful ladies include Gaga’s “Telephone” collaborator Beyoncé (#9), talk-show host and former “American Idol” judge Ellen DeGeneres (#10), author and former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (#16) and screen siren and activist Angelina Jolie (#21). Gaga is no novice when it comes to Forbes shout-outs. In June, she debuted at #4 on the magazine’s 2010 Celebrity Power List, due to her cash-magnet Monster Ball Tour, $62 million in earnings, Web popularity and deals with companies such as Polaroid and MAC. B was bumped two spots to #2 after raking in $86 million from her world tour, arsenal of endorsement deals and House of Deréon products. Oprah has been a Forbes mainstay, coming in at #1 this year on the Celebrity Power List after ceding the crown to Angelina Jolie the year before. The mogul snatched the top spot back with a nine-figure payday and media conglomerate that includes TV shows, magazines and more.
Perhaps Gaga will wield her hefty worldwide clout to push for her causes. A longtime gay-rights supporter, the entertainer has most recently waged a campaign for the repeal of the U.S. Armed Forces’ polarizing “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

‘Due Date’ and ‘For Colored Girls’ open strong in second and third place for one of the best November box offices in recent history.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, at least in Hollywood, as the release of new films “Megamind,” “Due Date” and “For Colored Girls” joined forces to create one of the most lucrative November weekend box-office performances ever, promising a very strong start to the forthcoming holiday season.
The animated comedy “Megamind” was the weekend’s biggest winner, spreading its sinister influence over American moviegoers everywhere to the tune of $47.7 million. “Megamind” stars Will Ferrell as the titular supervillain, who goes through a change of heart once the defeat of his superhero archrival (Brad Pitt) inspires the rise of a new bad guy (Jonah Hill). The flick shares similar themes to “Despicable Me,” Steve Carell’s animated superhero flick that arrived earlier this summer. Although “Megamind” scored roughly $10 million less in its opening weekend than “Despicable Me,” the success of both movies proves that it’s still good to be bad at the box office.
“The Hangover” director Todd Phillips’ return to hard R-rated comedy in “Due Date” wasn’t without its fair share of witnesses, as Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis’ hilarious road-trip adventure brought in a solid $33.5 million for a second-place finish. Not as strong an opening as “The Hangover” in 2009, “Due Date” nonetheless brought home the bacon, clearing more than half of its own production budget in the process.
Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls” debuted solidly in third place for Lionsgate, raking in $20.1 million in its first weekend in theaters. It was not exactly the most impressive of Perry’s performances — “Madea Goes to Jail,” at $41 million, still holds the record for his best opening — but considering it cleared the film’s production budget in its first weekend, “For Colored Girls” certainly did its job.
Fourth place belonged to “Red” ($8.9 million), the Bruce Willis-led action comedy that continues to hold onto a top five seat after four weekends at the box office. The film currently sits atop a total domestic money pile worth $71.9 million. “Saw 3D” rounded out the weekend’s top five performers with an $8.2 million take.

‘You just got to remember that the sky’s the limit,’ he tells MTV News of ‘Never Say Never.’

With fans going crazy over the trailer for Justin Bieber’s 3-D movie, it seems that he wants them to know one thing about the February release: It’s meant to inspire them to do whatever it is they’ve always dreamed of. Good thing it’s called “Never Say Never.”
“I want to let people know there’s a lot of people that are discouraging in life and that will tell you you can’t do something, but you just got to remember that the sky’s the limit,” he told MTV News at an L.A.-area book signing over the weekend. “You’re able to do whatever you set your mind to as long as you remember to keep God first and stay grounded. So I think the movie really explains that, and it’s really inspiring.”
The flick’s director, Jon Chu, echoed that sentiment when he spoke with MTV News last month.” “It’s really an interesting sort of pass between his real life to his music, so I think in the trailer, we break it down every step of the way in his life. Everyone said, ‘It’s not possible,’ ” Chu said. “Every step, everyone’s always said, ‘No, no, no, no.’ And he’s always said, ‘Yes, yes, yes.’ And that sort of ‘never say never’ idea is conveyed in the trailer.
“That’s sort of the power of our movie: to help inspire kids to follow their dreams, and anyone really, kid or adult,” he added. “It’s been sort of a family journey of fulfilling your destiny.”
The trailer, which debuted last week, was filled with behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with some of the people important in Bieber’s life, including mentor Usher and manager Scott “Scooter” Braun. Chu said that if Bieber’s fans were tempted by what they saw in the trailer, they should love the film when it hits their local theater.
“We talked about the story of us sort of going back to his life and seeing a lot of archival footage and things that have never been seen that his mom shot when he was a kid,” Chu said. “We don’t have as much of that in the trailer, [and] the movie uses a lot, ’cause we’re finding it really fascinating to see him grow. It’s one of the very few generations that have been able to be shot when they were a kid to a teenager and see all the steps of his development.”

Disney California Adventure theme park has introduced a new ride recording for California Screamin’, featuring the voice of actor Neil Patrick Harris.
The official Disney Parks Blog says NPH’s new recordings are meant to emulate a classic carnival sideshow barker.
California Screamin’ is in the Paradise Pier section of Disney California Adventure. That part of the park has a classic boardwalk amusement park feel.
California Screamin’ is the longest and fastest ride at Disneyland Resort in California, with a 120-foot drop and top speeds of 58 miles per hour. The roller coaster is steel, though it is painted and styled to look like a classic wooden ride.
NPH’s love of Disney is well-documented. He has been a narrator during EPCOT’s holiday Candlelight Processional show in past years, and last month, he hosted an event celebrating Disney animatronics at the Disneyland Hotel.
He professes his love for theme parks in his Twitter profile, and he hinted on Twitter about his California Screamin’ involvement over the weekend.

On Thursday (January 7), the U.K.’s Royal Mail unveiled a series of 10 new stamps, honoring the most iconic album covers of the past 40 years.
The albums featured in the new series are the Rolling Stones‘ Let It Bleed, Led Zeppelin‘s IV, David Bowie‘s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, Mike Oldfield‘s Tubular Bells, The Clash‘s London Calling, New Order‘s Power, Corruption and Lies, Primal Scream‘s Screamadelica, Pink Floyd‘s The Division Bell, Blur‘s Parklife and — the most recent album on to make the cut — Coldplay‘s A Rush of Blood to the Head.
Meant to honor “the most potent graphic images of modern times, many of which have provided a visual soundtrack to people’s lives,” the series is the end result of a lengthy research process by the Royal Mail, who looked through thousands of album covers by British artists before deciding on the final list. And, during a Wednesday night BBC Radio broadcast, it was revealed that the queen herself actually approved each design.
Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page — who helped design the cover for IV — was on hand to celebrate the release of the stamps and recalled the mysterious nature of the album’s iconic imagery.
“Almost 40 years after the album came out, nobody knows the old man who featured on the cover, nor the artist who painted him,” he said. “That sort of sums up what we wanted to achieve with the album cover, which has remained both anonymous and enigmatic at the same time.”
Of course, any great honor is befitting of an equally great contest, so, on the same day the stamps were made available to the general public, Coldplay decided to give one of their Rush of Blood stamps away. In a message on their official site, the band held a contest to send one lucky fan “a letter using a Coldplay stamp, postmarked with today’s issue date.”
“We visited our local post office earlier today and bought some of the Coldplay stamps,” the message read. “Very nice they are too.”

Back when his 16-year-old protégé, Justin Bieber, was still a toddler, the ATL singer was making the ladies faint with hits like “You Make Me Wanna” and “Nice & Slow.” But his early success was just a prelude to the music-world domination he’s achieved with club bangers and deeply personal slow jams in the years since.
Usher’s divorce from Tameka Foster was the latest personal development to fueled his 2010 chart-topping album Raymond v. Raymond. Now the singer is set to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards, and his smash “OMG” will battle it out for a Moonman in three categories: Best Male Video, Best Dance Video and Best Choreography. Here’s a look at how the singer’s recent success has steered him toward VMA accolades:
Following the release of the divorce-themed “Papers,” his more upbeat video “Hey Daddy (Daddy’s Home)” premiered in January 2010. The clip followed the romantic superstar as he tried to juggle the demands of his professional and personal life.
In March, Usher talked to MTV News about incorporating that balance into Raymond Vs. Raymond. “I think this is the one time where I’m able to put it all in, emotionally and the good times — super-freaky and then also super-emotional.”

The star didn’t hold back in the visuals or the lyrics, which both detail a freaky rendezvous with some very game ladies. Usher revealed that this track, like many of his other hits, was inspired by real-life experiences.
The club anthem “OMG” featured Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.I.Am and revealed the R&B kingpin’s more club-friendly side. The accompanying video showcased Usher’s easy swagger and ever-sharp dance skills.
Raymond was such a hit that in August the singer released Versus, an extension of the smash album featuring songs like the Jay-Z collabo “Hot Tottie.”
Usher, who has a history of tearing up the VMA stage, will return to the main event this year. He recently reminded his fans that live television paired with his onstage wizardry can result in some seriously unforgettable moments. “You never know what’s gonna happen on an MTV VMA stage,” he said. “I look forward to making it a night to remember.”
The star has also made one of the most savvy moves in recent pop music history by signing teen phenom Bieber, who has gone on to induce global tween hysteria and set YouTube records.
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through September 12.

When it comes to destroying luggage, airlines and airports are in a league of their own. Bags have been set on fire, dropped in dumpsters and left out in the rain.
But a new incident at London Heathrow airport may take the new top spot in baggage mistreatment when 240 bags were drenched in raw sewage. The sewage came from a main waste pipe that burst at a luggage storage area.
A hygiene firm brought into the airport was unable to clean any of them, so the bags were all considered a total loss.
BAA, who operate London Heathrow will now pay up $1,600 per bag, putting the total damage at around $384,000 – plus whatever it costs to clean and repair the mess. Of course, the airport operator said they are “extremely sorry”.

Late pop icon’s estate brought in more than $275 million in 12 months, according to Forbes.

In life, Michael Jackson was forever dogged by rumors of financial struggles. But in death, the late pop icon has vaulted to the top of the list of celebrities whose estates generate millions. In fact, according to a new Forbes magazine list, Jackson is by far the richest dead celebrity, with an estate that brought in more than $275 million over the past 12 months.
Jackson’s music and “This Is It” documentary have been so lucrative that he outearned the combined hauls of megastars Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Madonna and Jay-Z. Not only that, but Jackson also outpaced the combined earnings of all of the other late celebs on the list.
How did he do it? A combination of smart licensing deals cut by the executors of his estate, a huge spike in sales of the singer’s catalog since his June 2009 death and, most important, the $250 million worldwide box-office receipts of the tour rehearsal film “This Is It,” including a $60 million advance from Sony Pictures. Music sales alone brought in $50 million thanks to heavy radio play and album sales, along with receipts from a Jackson-themed video game and the re-release of his autobiography, “Moon Walk,” which added another $50 million to the pile.
“The cash flow on an annual basis is tremendous,” Donald David, an estate lawyer who handled the finances of rapper Tupac Shakur after his death, told the magazine. “Sure, it’s going to decline eventually, but it’s going to be a huge amount in the foreseeable future. [Jackson's] kids are going to have grandkids before that money’s gone.”
The unprecedented numbers could continue, as a deal with Sony Music to issue unreleased recordings — the first album is due in November — is worth another $200 million to $250 million over the next seven years. Money will also keep flowing in as a result of Jackson’s ownership of half of the Sony/ATV catalog, which contains a half a million songs by a stunning array of artists, including Lady Gaga, Elvis Presley, Eminem, Bob Dylan and Beyoncé. That deal alone could rake in $25 million to $50 million a year.
Coming in at #2 on the list is perennial top deceased earner Presley, whose receipts shot up $5 million to give him $60 million in the past year thanks to the newly launched Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show featuring his music as well as the boost in licensed products and merchandise in honor of what would have been his 75th birthday.
The estate of “Lord of the Rings” author J.R.R. Tolkien banked $50 million, mostly due to the sales of 500,000 books over the past year, followed by the estate of “Peanuts” creator Charles Schulz ($33 million) and, rounding out the top 5, late Beatle John Lennon ($17 million), whose earnings ballooned 30 years after his murder as a result of the re-release of his solo catalog, licensing deals with Cisco and Mont Blanc and receipts from “Beatles Rock Band.”
The rest of the top 10: “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” author Stieg Larsson ($15 million), Dr. Seuss (born Theodor Geisel) ($11 million), Albert Einstein ($10 million), New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner ($8 million) and “My Funny Valentine” songwriter Richard Rodgers ($7 million).

Everyone loves an underdog story, and Approach From the Underground definitely is one. It’s a blog about a guy who’s trying to overcome the awkwardness of asking girls out on a date by approaching some of the ladies he sees on his commute. So why does he weird me out so much?
The chips are definitely not stacked in his favor in terms of the likelihood of his getting a date (I mean, it’s the IRL equivalent of “Saw ur pic, thot u looked hawt”) — and something about the username “asianreindeer” doesn’t advertise the blogger’s stud status — but somewhere between his flowery descriptions of the women he’s interested in and the actual audio recordings of him trying to pick them up (he hides a microphone somewhere on his person) things get a little too creepy for me to root him on.

‘There’s a better way his time could be utilized … to help the community,’ rocker tells Entertainment Weekly.

T.I. may be optimistic about his second stint behind bars, but friend and collaborator Kid Rock doesn’t agree with the rapper’s recent legal sentence. In the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, the rocker expresses sympathy for T.I., who turned himself in to a low-security prison in Arkansas on Monday for probation violations.
“It’s sad. He’s such a nice guy. It’s a tricky situation, but I feel bad for him,” Kid Rock said. “I understand someone’s gotta learn their lesson, and I know they gave him a chance, but there’s a better way his time could be utilized to help other people, something to help the community.”
The two recently collaborated on “Care,” which will appear on Kid Rock’s forthcoming LP. He went on to say that there are other things the legal system should be focusing on, adding, “Some of these jail things, I don’t agree with them, especially when you got so much horrid sh– going on in the world.”
T.I., who was sent back to the same facility where he served nine months last year, was arrested with his wife, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, in Los Angeles. The two were charged with drug possession, a violation of Tip’s probation.
Kid Rock recently had his own legal troubles when a man named Harlen Akins sued him for his involvement in a 2007 scuffle that took place at an Atlanta-area Waffle House. The singer appeared in court to testify on his own behalf that he did not attack Akins and that the fight hadn’t even occurred until the man instigated Rock. Akins, who was seeking $6,000 in medical costs, was awarded $40,000 in compensatory damages.
In an interview with MTV News, Kid Rock explained why he felt compelled to get personally involved in the case. “Do people really think I was down there because I was being sued for $6,000?” he asked. “They wanted $2.9 million in punitive damages. But that didn’t get printed anywhere. I had no choice but to go down there and state our side of the story. At the end of the day, they wanted $2.9 million and they got $40,000. I consider that justice done.”
